Copyright, Fair Use, and Creative Commons

The first blog on my new website will be focused on copyright, fair use, and creative commons. This is an important subject that I feel needs to be addressed in my first blog.

Copyright
It is important to know that we are all protected under the copyright laws of the United States as long as we follow the guidelines that have been listed below:

1. It must be something that is physical. It can not just be an idea you have in your mind.
2. It has to be original by using your own work and not something copied by someone else.
3. It needs to have involved some type of creative effort or expression.
4. It can't be a name, title, or short phrase.

These rules of copyright give control to the author on reproducing/copying, distributing, creative derivative works and performing or displaying the work.If someone, other than the author tries to use the work of someone else by reproducing/copying, distributing etc. it is a copyright infringement, and that is a federal offense!

Cheating, deception and fabrication are considered Academic Dishonesty and are a breach of ethical trust. It is basically close to copyright infringement, but they are two different things.

Fair Use
It is also important to know about "fair use" when discussing copyright laws. Fair Use allows for the use of copyrighted material to be used for research and educational purposes. It also includes parody of the work. This way society can benefit from the material without copyright infringement.

Creative Commons
Creative Commons is a non-profit organization that helps to make it a bit easier to use material by providing an alternative to contacting the author to use their material. They have different licenses that allow creators to choose how they want their works used. When someone posts their work on the web, if they use creative commons, other are allowed to use it under one of the licenses that Creative Commons has.

It is very important to know the rules of copyright, fair use, and creative commons. The more we know about the rules, the safer we will be from copyright infringements.

  1. Stephanie, you have a good looking blog. It isn't too busy and it is easy to read. I like the way you have broken the page down into subheadings. Nice addition. The more I look at other's blogs, I am thinking I have not done the attribution correctly. I followed the instructions, I thought. Hopefully I will get some feedback from Dr. Crooks.
